Presenting the New American Revolution: Economic Democracy
Thomas Paine proposed that political democracy is Common Sense, and a revolution was born that has rippled throughout the world. 250 years later the Common Sense of democracy is crumbling, eroded by an economic system founded during the aristocracy of the UK. An aristocratic economic system is not a strong foundation for democratic values. We need to revolutionize our economy if we hope to save our democracy. Can a revolution of the pen prevent a revolution of violence?
That is not for me to decide, but I believe it can by the will of the people.
What follows is a modest proposal to alter elements of how we manage our economy to better support our democracy. We don’t have to toss the baby with the bath. Capitalism has many strengths to incorporate into our democracy, but to continue serving the people versus the oligarchs it needs constraint more than regulation. How about considering wealth constraints that don’t limit the right to get rich?
Democracy involves an informed ‘We the People’ and excellent education should not be reserved to the oligarchy. The path of merit should be equally available to all people. Likewise all people should have the option to a training and or formal education after high school. Yet nothing in life is free is it? Check out the proposal for Economic Democracy in Education.
These and other ideas are on offer at Revolutionary Reflections. Because “We the People” deserve the benefits of Economic Democracy. So in the Revolutionary Spirit of Thomas Paine, 250 years later I would like to present common sense proposals to build Economic Democracy. Are you ready to consider the next Revolution to send ripples throughout the world? Do you think the US has the spirit to pull it off? Can US moral relevance and respect be restored as something we pass down to our children and theirs?
That is not for me to decide, but I believe it can by the will of the people.
